The Hay Paddock

Jasper Hill

Georgia's Paddock Shiraz 2019

97P WS, Whopping 15.5%. At the edge of where natural yeast dies. May be they used designer yeast? Anyways this is actually pretty good. Enormously complex with a bazillion interesting flavors including Eucalyptus. Picked this up for a tasting (I am hosting) it will be a mega hit. Folks will love this in your face flavor hammer. Mount Pleasant Wines

Lovedale Hunter Valley Sémillon 2009

Very pale lemon in colour particularly for a 13 year old wine. Aromas of wet hay, toast, lime and lemon curd notes. On the palate that soapy lanolin like texture you get with aged Semillon. My last 2009. If I had another one it would be ok to drink in the next few years. A prolific trophy winner on the Australian Show Circuit as you can see from the label. — 4 years ago

Pessac-Léognan Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend 1996

Oh yessss…
That’s a lot more like it.
Inviting nose of hay, green tea, vanillapods, lemoncurd and quince-jelly. Wonderful mouthfeel, loooong finish. When I savour and taste this, I am puzzled by its apparent contradictions: umami vs citrusfruit, massive structure vs subtle complexity, marmalade vs mushrooms, strict and rigid vs suave and playful, searing acidity vs creamy roundness. Only touches of tertiary characteristics.
Full of life, 25 years young. Love it!

Domaine Pascal Cotat

La Grande Côte Sancerre Sauvignon Blanc 2000

Probably not everyone’s cup of tea but I really liked it. Broad, powerful, acidity lower than I was expecting. Some seriously vegetal and herbal stuff, like hay, camomile and sage, going on along with ripe melon, grapefruit and pear, almond and chalk. — 5 years ago

Nice! I adore Cotat with good age!

Jasper Hill

Emily's Paddock Shiraz Cabernet Franc 2003

Mid crimson in colour. Tarry savoury berry aromas. On the palate medium to full bodied with earth tar and liquorice ~ typical of mature Heathcote. Tannins resolved. The 15.5%ABV largely hidden. Amazing intensity and flavour considering its age - powerful in fact - also some sweetness. Jasper Hill largely contributed to putting Heathcote on the map. — 7 years ago

Domaine Guiberteau

Saumur Chenin Blanc 2017

Very mineral nose with crushed rocks, a hint of smoke, hay, white flowers, petrol a bit maybe ? The palate is very good : a wide opening with white flowers and white peach, a real grip and texture that lasts and accompanies the acid backbone to the finish with white fruits. Very good but perhaps a tad under the 2015. Less complexity in the structure I guess. Still very good though — 8 years ago

Golden hay color. Aromas of pineapple, honey, apple, peach, white floral, and lemon. Beautifully balanced with a hint of minerality. Dry, medium body and acidity. Best white wine I’ve had in a while! — 2 years ago

Clos Ste. Magdeleine

Cassis Blanc Marsanne Blend 2022

Delicate nose of green mango rind, tart green citrus, maybe wet sea sand, with a touch of hay, with some slight bakers goods notes underneath. Light bodied, grassy and mineral on the palate, with notes of honeydew melon, maybe some ash, underripe green fruits, maybe herbaceous notes, but slightly creamy on the finish, with a palate or maybe green lush grass. Very interesting! — 2 years ago

Annual Boy’s Trip away - this time to Cairns. At a BYO Indian Restaurant. No formal notes. Hunter Valley Semillon from a good year which could still go for another 10 years. Trademark waxy lanolin, wet hay notes. Such purity on the palate. — 5 years ago

Tyrrells are better than ever Byron. Apart from these 2 excellent whites they have released some individual paddock Shiraz made from very old vines planted in the 1800’s - known as “Old Patch”. Difficult to source even in Australia as their online members snap them up. I did manage to get a couple of bottles through 5 Way Cellars in Sydney.

We lived in Wahroonga so Tyrell’s was a regular stop for us along with Tamburlaine, Lindeman’s, Brokenwood and Lake’s Folly.

Haven’t had Tamburlaine for some time , so not up to date. The others are all going strong, particularly Brokenwood, but Iain Riggs has jacked up his prices particularly for the Graveyard Shiraz.

Cain Vineyard & Winery

Cain Five Spring Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 1995

I knew Santa was a 49ers fan this year!!!

Decant for sediment( lots of chunky/fine sedinent). A vivid dark purple with some browing and little bricking. On the nose: sweet/delicate "old" cabernet notes jump from the glass with musty leather, some dark fruit, cedar, bale of hay. Taste: prunes, minerals, smoke, with a cherry leather medium plus long finish. On the downside of its life, but still drinking great for an old 12.5% alcohol cab.....Yum!

Let this warm a bit from fridge temp.
Large glass.
Briny, acid packed, ( there’s not a lot of nose…yet) straw/hay, yellow stone fruits. Really nice lingering pricklinesses,
Goes very well with Charred raab & orange shrimp. In my glass, quite orange tinged, in the Mrs. Smaller glass, pale white?
Thanks @PLCB

Domaine Bertrand

Les Fouillouses Julienas Gamay 2019

Cherry, hay, earth, plum somehow. Nice typical nose. The palate is well designed with a great acid backbone, a nice cherry note that shines all through the palate, soft, almost cushiony mouthfeel, a great build up in the rear with a tiny tannins effect that create a tiny distorsion in the mouthfeel before a fruit forward finish with a tiny bitter note that pops up. In a much better place than the last bottle. 2 more bottles out of the 6-box we bought in August last year — 4 years ago

Pear, yellow apple, minerals, hay. Lots of ripe pear and apple on the palate with some bread crust and steely minerality. A touch of bitterness and alcohol heat as well. Medium acidity.

Good balance and nice, ripe fruit flavors.

I wasn’t expecting to like this as much as I do, for some reason. Anyway, this is excellent. Very fragrant (with air), showing intense sweet hay, meadow flowers, ginger ale notes, crisp pear, and crushed stone. Intense in the mouth too, but with a weightlessness that is very appealing. Long, minerally, bone dry finish with an almost Muscadet-like quinine thing at the end. — 5 years ago

Cherry, cola a bit on the nose, some hay, some flowers (violet?) , an earthy thing too. The palate has a very nice balance with a strong acid backbone, some bright cherry all along, some width, a nice fresh and grippy texture and a superb finish with violets and cherry. This is again delivering outstandingly! 😍 — 7 years ago
