The Long White

Pol Roger

Sir Winston Churchill Brut Champagne 2013

This wine is STUNNING.

Its nose offers notes of pear and apple tart with toasted almond, nougat, marzipan, brioche, lemon curd, raspberry coulis, pie crust, dried white rose, chalk, oyster shell …

On the palate this wine is creamy with vibrant acidity adding lift and balance; it has a fine-beaded and persistent mousse and a long, elegant finish. Flavors are consistent with the nose.

Special Cuvée Brut Champagne Blend

First time pairing champagne and steak and yes, certainly works for me. Subtle and elegantly accentuates the creaminess on the palate. — 5 days ago

Château Rieussec

Sauternes Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend 2016

This is still young but drinking superbly. Plenty of acidity to offset the sweetness, very long finish. Aromas and flavors of pineapple, orange blossom, honey, peach, apricot, dried apricot, ripe pear, candied lemon, ginger, saffron, vanilla - so much going on in the glass! Exceptional wine with excellent balance of sweetness, flavor intensity and acidity. Has many years ahead of it but hard to resist now. — 12 days ago

Château d'Yquem

Sauternes Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend 1999

Yellow gold with copper hue, quite thin pale rim . Caramelised pineapple, saffron , vanilla , creme brûlée , quite rich and decadent. On the palate again quite rich , barley sugar , creme brûlée and saffron, just enough acidity to balance and a little alcoholic warmth . On the medium length finish , lemon rind and a touch of caramel . This is probably at peak now , just misses a little vibrancy , freshness, however successful for the vintage . Drink now and over the next 10- 15 years — 6 days ago

My first dauvissat Chablis - delicious and decanted in a really really long and extra decanter at chèvre d’or. Mineral and rich. With Hitomi and Manu — 17 days ago

Viña Gravonia Crianza Rioja Viura 2015

Popped and poured; enjoyed a single glass from a bottle that had been opened for over an hour. The 2015 “Gravonia” pours a deep straw color with medium viscosity. On the nose, the wine is developing with charming oxidative notes of black lemon, honeydew, tumeric, and nuts. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long with a sort of waxy texture. Distinctive and delicious. Damn, I love these wines. Drink now through 2035. — a month ago

Called old chenin, as did others. Some fur with dried crème brûlée and a bit of musk. Wow. — 3 days ago
