2007 Gigondas from certified bio dynamic winemaker Montirius is a blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre. From bones planted in 1925 this medium body red shows delivers lots of red fruit, dried herbs, pepper with a dusty earthiness in the mouth. This wine spent no time in oak at all and seems to be at its peak now. Decent bottle at $24.95.

Warm baguette with whipped butter and lemon. Artichoke, green tomato, grilled pineapple, smoky hog jowl on greens, pretzel dough, basil and capers are bursting from the glass in gaseous form. Medium mouthfeel, buttery and olive-briny, white mushroom, flat-citric lemon oil bordering on curd, and yellow wax beans with water chestnuts and almonds. Nice acidity keeps tho one from becoming sluggish. A full, round mouthful, with plenty to contemplate. A more immediate expression of Les Quarts, the 2017 is jammed packed with fruit but oh so fresh. Masses of blackberry, garrigue, crushed stone and wood smoke rise up from the glass. It's silky and suave, displaying polished purple and blue berries, contrasted by sour citrus, with a note of sweet violet candies carried by juicy acids. Chunky baker's chocolate baking, teak, black shoe polish, burnt mocha rye, mint in turned soil scribbled on by grape scented marker. Smoked plum, worm castings, raw chocolate, espresso grounds, graphite dust. Oak and pepper belched from an arcane volcanic sacrifice. Wood tannins mushroom and coat the tongue.
