Saturday night with Bordeaux blend from South Africa,paired with friends & their own ‘asado ( Argentine grill of chorizo, entricot, & sirloin; salad w tomato, jicama etc). Plenty of black fruits, cassis, & smokiness, all reflected in nose & palate. With air becomes quite long & elegant. Great concentration but balanced. Well done. Should I be surprised? Haven’t tasted a higher end cuvée from S Africa in eons so my data points are ancient, but yes, surprised — 2 months ago

Granato Teroldego 2010

Oh…how I adore Elisabetta’s wines and getting to drink Granato with some age is a huge treat! Popped and poured; enjoyed over a two hour time period and it evolved very nicely in that time. The 2010 Granato pours a deep ruby with near opaque core. Medium+ viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of cassis, fresh sage, mild funk, granite rock and a soft expression of warm spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with good structure still. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and there is a drying sensation of almost licking a rock. As mentioned earlier, this opened up beautifully after about 30min and continued to shine. Admittedly, I don’t have a lot of data points on decade+ Teroldego so it’s hard to say for sure how long this could last however, when I consider that this is still developing and doesn’t show much in terms of secondary characteristics, I would say this still has a long life ahead. Drink now with a short decant or through 2030; possibly longer. — 9 months ago

Bourgogne Blanc Chardonnay 2014

Blinded, I thought this was an Australian Chard from the early 2000’s. Certainly more developed than it should be, this was perhaps not the best data point for this wine. Quite dark with heavy lanolin and honey notes on the nose, along with oak spice, cream, mint, fennel, mild citrus, and a touch of mouldy funk. The palate was surprisingly ripe and concentrated, with steely acidity and a menthol-like finish. Not fresh per say, but definitely wasn’t unlikable and had energy. — 2 years ago

Russian River Valley Mourvèdre 1997

So, I found this in a box (with more bottles of the same wine, same vintage), and after (ironically??) receiving a very sweet email from Swan Winery today (finally??) acknowledging that the legendary Rod Berglund has finally agreed that he is no longer a spring chicken, I decided to open this — 12.5% ABV, Russian River Valley fruit, 27 years old going on 7 years to this old guy’s palate, marvelous fruit and acid, long finish, really just another data point on the sheer (50 year) greatness of Swan Winery!! Rod, I still have other 1990s (1995, 1996 and 1999) vintages of this RRV Mourvèdre, you are truly a winemaking legend, my friend!! Wishing you MANY more vintages!! Doug — 4 months ago

Curiosity finally got the best of me as it was a buddy’s birthday and he wanted to try this 2007. I think this received a three digit score, so whether points matter to you or not, it’s fun to try and get a data point.

Tried a glass right at pop, then drank from the decanter over the next 4-5hrs.

This was quite the rollercoaster. It was big and bruising the first hour, then blossomed in to an extremely smooth and balanced Bordeaux style blend. Dark red and black berry fruits, violets, mocha, dark chocolate and pipe tobacco all dominate the rich mid-palate. It seemed to somewhat shut down after 3+hrs, so either pop and enjoy or hold another three years for this drinking window.

Popped and poured; enjoyed as an aperitif prior to dinner. The NV Brut Rosé pours a very pretty pink color with a persistent mousse. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of raspberry, strawberry, spring flowers, some brioche, lemon citrus and minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ acid. The fruit is round in a good way. Balanced. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and chalky. This is a classy NV Rosé that’s easy for the wine nerd and the crowd to appreciate. Popped and poured; consumed over two days. Consistent notes on both days. Burnished golden color with moderate mousse. Medium viscosity. On the nose, ripe raspberries, white flowers, meringue, brioche. On the palate, the wine is dry with a medium+ acid. The texture is almost oily. Long chalky finish. I must compliment Delectable’s computer vision algo here - such a blur photo and it took only a second to correctly identify the wine! For me, this was the better of the 2011 duo in our line-up.
