Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2022

Reddish in color with medium intensity.

Fresh picked cherries and strawberries on the nose with light chocolates notes.

Medium bodied with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate with cherries, strawberries, raspberries, chocolates, earth and spices.

Medium plus on the finish with fine grained tannins and raspberries.

This is a very young Grenache blend from Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Complex and engaging. Nicely balanced and spicy. The high alcohol is well integrated already.

Ripe and fresh tasting at this point, and will continue to age nicely in the next 10 years.

Easy drinking and good by itself as a sipping wine.

A blend of 75% Grenache and 15% Syrah with some Mourvedre and Cinsault. Aged mostly in concrete vats for 12 months.

16% alcohol by volume.

91 points.

Domaine Jean-Louis Chave

Hermitage Syrah 2001

It’s been a couple of years since I last encountered the 2001 vintage of Chave’s Hermitage. That bottle was a library release from the domaine and so is this example. Splash decanted directly before service. The 2001 pours a garnet color with a translucent core; medium viscosity with significant staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is vinous and a total umami bomb: Koji beef broth, dried and baked brambles, dried purple flowers, black pepper, Kalamata olive, organic and inorganic earth along with fine warm spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long. Looking back on my notes from 2024, there’s a common theme: the 2001 is all about dat bass. Drink now with some patience and through 2041. — 21 days ago

Vieilles Vignes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2022

Always a good one. Not sure I could distinguish from the ‘19 I had several weeks back - same voluptuous fruit, slightly wooden finish - could definitely use a few more years - this young it’s a little too fruit forward/unsubtle — 22 days ago

Beaujolais Villages Gamay 2023

Red fruit, cranberry, perfumed spice of slight clove.

Red plum, nice tannin grip on the front palate. Chewy. Gravely. Pretty. Punchy.

Fruit dominant, not much length. Perhaps a bit exposed, but still very drinkable. — a month ago

@ESF, purchased both Chavez on release, and I *think* they are last bottles I have, but hopefully I’ll discover a few more. Chave was still relatively affordable in those days for mere mortals like myself.

Côte du Py Morgon Gamay 2023

One of my favorite wines I've had recently, the nose is an amazing combination of red fruit, violet, mushrooms and forest floor, all of which transfers to the palate. Fantastic to have with food or to drink on its own and contemplate. Hard to think of a better Beaujolais that I've had than this one — 15 days ago
