Guigal’s entry-level Côte-Rôtie, it is mostly Syrah with a touch of Viognier (4%) from plots in two areas of Côte-Rôtie: the Côte Blonde, with limestone-rich soils and Cote Brune (iron-rich, darker soils, hence the name. Aged for 36 months in oak barrels (50% new). Dark ruby color. Spices, smoke notes. Full-bodied, concentrated, but relatively lean on the palate (compared to the Saint Josephs tasted earlier) — 3 years ago
Strong head builder; just under cappuccino. Arch and aqueduct lacing. Dark chocolate ganache and espresso notes veil a burnt black cherry and dark rye bread nose. Black coffee and bittersweet chocolate grip the palate, with burnt pecan edges. A creaminess suggests hazelnut oil, cola bean, tonka, carob, and mildly, ginger snap. Easy to drink stout that doesn’t give in to superlative extremes. Lovely beer!

Fruity, smooth and flavorful. Pairs well with food or enjoyed on its own. I'd order this again. — 8 years ago
Domaine Jasmin Cote Rotie 2012 Vintage
A wine that seems to make the rounds as you can currently find it from @rarewineco , @kermitlynchwine and - here in Denver - from @ajselection. Old school producer that survived through WWII and sticks to just one bottling. De-stemmed from what I surmise but not without a rustic, bloody meatiness on the nose. Slight reduction, still young. The fruit character is markedly NOT black or purple like the Crozes / St Josephs I'm so often drinking instead (cheaper). Instead, it's a medley of black cherry, strawberry and sweet raspberry with an oddly contrasted tropical edge (hello 4% viognier!), that ultimately takes a back seat to the savory, spice notes. Certainly ample body despite being only 12.5% and aged in neutral oak. Seems built for the long haul. Cool wine. I sell magnums of 2007... I wonder what that tastes like?

@Delectable Wine - This is majority, if not 100%, Syrah. It’s not a Grenache blend.
I was skeptical. I usually don’t like Syrah from the Southern Rhône. It’s usually blocky and uninteresting. But this. Put this blind in a group of Saint Josephs and no one bats an eye. Cracked pepper, dark berry, granite, and pink grapefruit rind. So lively in the mouth. Clingy and stoney. Delicious. — 8 years ago
Cloudy urine colour. With marshmallow creme enamel topping. Alpine sunrise lacing. Yeasty nose shows chive and beet greens. Grapefruit and black lime. Full palate creaminess turns sharp with lemon pith and oil surfacing. Microgreens and dried apricot form the parameters while yeasty pomelo notes bolster the core. Very zingy finish that refreshes the palate and adds substance.

Ebullient coiffure. White and high. Recoiling sectioned serpent turns caption ball lacing. Doughy, almost peirogi nose shows orange and tangerine piths, crispy breadstick, lightest white pepper, raw peanut, and caramelized shallots. Grape leaves, brown sugar sanding, salsify, baby corn and pumpernickel.

Augustiner-Brau-München Maximator dopplebock.
After an afternoon of stuffing homemade sausages as a fundraiser for our kid's school, there may be no better nightcap than this impeccable beer.
Chocolatey, toasty, very well balanced, even with its relatively high gravity, many new world brewers could learn something here.

47% mourvedre, 39% grenache, 14% syrah (on front label!)—this opens up so beautifully. If only I had a case to lay down. Laser beam thread of acidity, St Josephs/ Northern Rhone role model despite Southern blend, high toned: subtle, crushed black fruits, cassis. Absolutely charming but refined as well. Viva old school Cali makers like St John. — 8 years ago

Yonder Cities is a collaborative Saison IPA brew by Union Craft Brewing and DC Brau. Small bubbles through out with a cloudy amber hue and small head. A bit of Brett on the nose with some citrus notes, floral, spices, hoppy and a little yeast. Well balanced and smooth palate. Nice level of hops and bitterness. Notes of flowers, citrus fruits, salted caramel and a bit of wheat. Rounded and long finish. — 9 years ago
Interestingly I had this wine with a bottle of 2019 Saint Josephs from Domaine Remizieres. The Mesa Del Sol was a bit more oxidized with a bit more acid, and the Rhone wine was a bit more complex, but they were very difficult to otherwise distinguish. Good job. — 2 years ago
One of my favorite St. Josephs — 7 years ago
One of the finest St Josephs I’ve ever tasted. Quiet, calm, utterly pure Syrah that’s complete and close to perfection. Not trying to be anything other than the stately, refined thing it is. Reminds me of what this appellation was when no one wanted these wines and nobody cared. — 7 years ago

Velvety and juicy, with dark berries, granite and unbelievable purity. Elegant yet immensely concentrated, with sweet, silky tannins and extraordinary texture. A total velvet bomb. One of the finest Saint-Josephs I’ve tasted. — 9 days ago
