Very enjoyable left bank bottling for $35 on the shelf, if not pretty closed. Decanted for 2+ hours and was just starting to reveal itself, still somewhat shy after 4+. Blackberry, stewed mulberry, earth, coffee grounds, garden, and spice. Not overly ripe or concentrated with a subtle bitter balance. Curious to see what day 2 is like. Good value candidate for cellaring though I wouldn’t hate a bit more acidity. — 2 months ago
Of extreme rarity, the mythical and cult-like wines of Prieure Roch really do show such singularity. Grand Cru Clos Vougeot, with vines planted as far back as 1929 and situated in what is a coveted sub-section “terroir royal,” is perhaps their best wine along with Clos de Beze. 2007 is showing superbly, combining the elegance of the vintage with the power of the site with captivatingly complex aromatics and a juicy, earthy and floral mineral inflicted core and a finish that keeps on going. For me, David Croix, without a doubt, crafts the most compelling wines from Beaune, and this 19’ Bressandes was certainly exemplary. I absolutely loved it. It wasn’t bombastic and I reckon could easily be overlooked in a blind, but it embodied everything I love about red Burgundy in its most classic form. Not indulgent, fresh, fine, and refreshingly pure, with not a trace of overripe sucrosity to distract from its understated beauty.
The nose unfurled with cool, fresh fruits - a lively mélange of black and red berries layered with subtle bunchy aromas. Delicate florals weave through, underscored by the quiet intrigue of black tea and the chalky minerality that only air revealed. On the palate, it was all substance without weight, medium-bodied yet vibrant, its energy carried by a bright acidity that invigorated the senses. Spices and dried herbs unfolded gently in the mid-palate, giving way to a finish of fine, resonant salinity. What a beaut! — 3 months ago
