Château Rayas

Réservé Châteauneuf-du-Pape Grenache Blend 2005

I’ve been fortunate to consume several bottles of this legend. However, this was the first bottle that did not have me babbling to my dinner guests. All the Rayas traits; elegance , pure fruit , spice were present just not oversized. — 18 hours ago

@Jay Kline It wss a good setting, gave it about an hour in the decanter. Drank along side the Soldera mini- vertical.

I haven’t had a Rayas in 40 years 😕 but my experience with Fonsalette is not good. Many tired, nearly dead bottles. It’s a crap shoot when a wine is so cultish that one almost of necessity has to acquire bottles in the secondary market from people who acquired it for reasons other than appreciation of the wine itself and therefore are more likely to have stored it poorly before getting bored with it and re-selling it. Rant finished. But I’m happy you had other great bottles!

@Tom Casagrande Please don’t misunderstand. This was a solid bottle. It just did not demonstrate the almost perfection of previous bottles.
With respect to your experience with the Fonsalette I can relate. I turned a friend on to Rayas in the late 90’s. His wife wanted to surprise him, but not spending CDP prices purchased a variety of Fonsalette from a very well-known retailer.. all 5 bottles were cooked .

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhône Blend 2012

From 375ml.

A very good Rhone producer visited in 2015.

At pop & pour, the fruits almost had a mid berry bubble gum character. That toned down almost immediately. Fruits are ripe; blackberries, black raspberries, baked plums, raspberries, dark cherries, juicy strawberries, chocolate bar to fudge, grilled, smoked meats, black pepper, dark spice, nutmeg, clove, iron pan, black tea, a touch of rubber toy, slight tarriness, dry herbs, roasted chestnuts, tobacco leaf, dry crushed rocks, dry top soil, hints of mint, dark, red flowers, violet’s, nice acidity with a well balanced-structured, stiffly tensioned with a lush finish that lasts 90 seconds and lands on earthiness & spice.

Plenty of life left in this 2012, even in 375ml.

La Bernardine Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2022

Sitting in Prague with my wife loving this red wine. It’s been warm and we have been drinking much more white wine than we typically do. Nice to get back to a delicious red wine. I recommend this wine. Do not get it by the glass, get a bottle. — 4 hours ago

Domaine du Pegau

Cuvée Réservé Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2021

Ruby in color with a wide reddish rim.

Nose of red and black fruits with light wood, tobacco and chocolate notes.

Dry on the palate with sweet raspberries, cherries, light oak, licorice, chocolates, spices and earth.

Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cherries.

This young Grenache blend is starting to drink very nicely now, with nice complexity and a soft mouthfeel.

Will continue to age nicely in the next 15 years.

Elegant and rich. Interesting and engaging. A very traditional Châteauneuf-du-Pape in style.

Well balanced and good by itself as a sipping wine. Will also pair nicely with food.

A blend of all 13 allowed grapes in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, but mostly Grenache. Hand picked and whole cluster. Aged for 2 years in large French oak barrels.

14.5% alcohol by volume.

91 points.

$110.

Big big concentration in the roussanne-heavy blend, with enough minerality and great texture to hold the big wave of alcohol — 17 days ago
