Federspiel Gruner Veltliner 2023

The nose is very minerally with chalky and flinty notes, apple juice, honey, and lemony notes, too. The palate shows a great acid drive, much more focused than most GV numbers I have had so far. I like its tension a lot! Apple juice and lemony notes all along, a soft, easy-going mouthfeel, a bit of grip in the rear, and a long finish with the same fruity notes and a chalky feel to it. This is not vert complex but super well made. I could picture myself sipping on this and serving it to both wine nerds and casuals alike at the party at home without a problem. — 4 days ago

Zwickl Grüner Veltliner 2017

Nice, deeply textured gruner from a producer I always respect. Without bottle agitation, has real palate density with white fruit, tea, a slight bit of funk, and great round acidity. My bottle wasn’t that different post a good shake (as they advise on the bottle). Tasty and a good value. — 2 months ago

Yellow with a greenish hue in color. Lime on the front palet and tart green apple on the back palet. Crisp and fresh. There was definite improvement after being opened for a day, recorded, and stored at 40F. I’m still warming up to the Grüner varietal!!! — 21 days ago

A bit disappointing. Full bodied and rich, but lacking anything to distinguish it. — 2 months ago

Wow, this is one animal of a wine!
Dense! Intense! Papaya, nectarine, pumpkin spiced latte (cardamom, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, white pepper), orange zest.
Great with pumpkin/pecan/sagebutter ravioli.

Loibner Loibenberg Smaragd Riesling 2012

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of four days and largely consistent throughout…though maybe leaning towards Day 3-4. The 2012 pours a straw color with medium viscosity. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of ripe and tart tropical and orchard fruit: pineapple, peach cup, tangerine, petrol, minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with high acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long. What a banger! AlZINGer does it again. These beg for some time in the cellar but few have the patience. Wow. Drink now through 2032 easy. — a month ago

Any time I open a Riesling or GV from a reputable producer, I wonder why I don’t open them more often.

Great vintage, great Austrian producer.

I really enjoy the differences between Alsatian Rieslings, German Rieslings and Austrian Rieslings, the latter normally being a bit more textural/full-bodied (and higher in ABV at 13%, compared to the typical 8-10% range of the others). Pale yellow in the glass. White peach and a sweet lemon/lemongrass type of aromatic. Ripe stone fruits (more peach but also apricot) and minerals/slate alongside a spine of acidity that isn’t sharp, but balanced. Tasty.

The Alsatian Riesling are often broad and big. Top ones are just rare in the US. One has to go to the source to try more producers.

@Pinotman /// Andreas : Thanks for the info. I’m normally opening sweet(er) German Rieslings, which makes sense at the lower ABV. I have a lengthy experience with Alsatian Rieslings and normally don’t find them “big”, but I suppose it’s relative. 2007 Trimbach CFE I had a few days ago was more elegant, but not as chiseled as I’d expect from a dry German Riesling. Also get TDN/petrol profile more common with Alsatian Rieslings than others.
