Tolpuddle Vineyard

Tasmania Pinot Noir 2015

I have several previous Delectable notes on this brilliant wine. As fellow Delectable taster Scott Rowe said of this wine “Epic”. Sadly my last of the 2015 vintage Tolpuddle Pinot Noir. There were too many things going for it not to be a success. :-
Coal River Tasmania; Shaw and Smith Winemaking team; 2015 vintage. There were spicy red cherries on the nose. A stalky whole bunch note. (50% whole bunch fermentation). See previous notes. Every year since has been a similar success.

Bell Hill Vineyards

Old Weka Pass Road Pinot Noir 2016

See several previous Delectable notes on this wine and vintage. A pale crimson colour with tawny garnet shades. Aromatics of red fruits (strawberry) and Sous Bois on the nose. It may be pale in colour but carries a Medium plus palate intensity of good length. A very good 2nd wine from Bell Hill from the Canterbury district (just to the north of Christchurch) which deserves more recognition as a source of high quality Pinot Noir. Also referred to as the Waipara District. — 3 months ago

Craiglee

Sunbury Shiraz 2012

See previous note in June 2023 where I questioned the ripeness of the fruit. This has the trademark spice and pepper. Very little fruit, more savoury characters. From one of Australia’s leading cool climate wineries. As Jancis said, “a real sense of place “ - in this case the Macedon Ranges just north of Tullamarine Airport. Very different to SA Shiraz. Just medium bodied - a leathery note with balanced tannins. As in previous note a touch of astringency at the finish. — 8 months ago

Muschelkalk Pinot Noir 2017

Absurdly good. See previous descriptions and ratings. Essentially Pinot does not get better than this. 12.5%. And this from a very bad vintage. — a month ago

Possibly the last bottle of Rose this year. Lovely dark salmon color. Consistent wine throughout, see previous notes of other vintages. Probably a little past prime. — 3 months ago

Dry River

Martinborough Pinot Noir 2013

Strong red florals and fading (compared to the previous tasting) yet noticeable oak. Also whole bunch influence. Tastes a bit bunchy. A little coarse on the medium plus bodied palate. Dark fruits - plum and cherry. Finishes with silky tannins which redeems the wine somewhat. A Shiraz drinkers Pinot with a twist - not very Burgundian. Amazingly Bob Campbell MW gave this wine 99 points in January 2015. — 6 months ago

Château Mouton Rothschild

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1990

Part of a Chateau Mouton Rothschild vertical from 1988-1990. This was my second time enjoying the 1990 vintage and, much like my previous experience, this was rather quiet early and then came on with the business, late. As before, a mix of red and black cassis, ripe and desiccated cherries, tobacco leaf, cedar box, old leather, damp earth, some mushrooms and baking spices. After two similar experiences, I believe this vintage needs a lot of patience and a lot of air to wake up. Without either, it will be misunderstood. Drink now through 2040+ — 2 months ago

Quilceda Creek

Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

2021 vintage. Tasted via Coravin. So. Much. Sweet. Oak. Much less concentration, mineral influence and grip than expected/recalled from previous vintages. Granted, tasting this 15 years too youthfully but, still, underwhelming. Honestly, a total waste of my time. Hurtz to say that as I consider this as one of, if not THE, best WA wine made. Just never rocked the boat, in a positive way, in any aspect. Would get totally blown out in a blind CA/WA/BDX Cab/Cab blend tasting in the $40-$50 range. Unimpressive. 5.29.24. — 7 months ago

I opened a 2000 a year or two ago and thought “this is too young”…the oak still so pronounced.
