Marie Courtin

Efflorescence Extra Brut Champagne Pinot Noir 2018

Marie-Courtin was established in 2005 by Dominique Moreau, who named her winery after her grandmother – a “woman of the earth” – surely an inspiration behind Dominique’s unwavering commitment to organic & biodynamic viticulture. She’s among the few (but growing # of) producers pursuing organic / biodynamic practices in Champagne, a notoriously challenging climate for mildew & rot.

Champagne Marie-Courtin is a Grower producer located in the village of Polisot in the Barséquannais, specializing in compelling terroir expressions, using a low intervention approach in the winery, with wild ferments and minimal (if any) dosage…

This wine fermented and aged in used (neutral) French barriques, allowing delicate oxygen influences w/out the oaky flavors. It spent 36 months aging sur lie (on the lees).

The result is a precise and chiseled wine with toasty notes next to layers of blossom, lemon peel, bright raspberry, strawberry, peach skin, kumquat, ripe pear, oyster shell, saline, blanched almond, bread dough, pastry, and baked red apple.

This wine represents a singular expression of a particular year, vineyard, and variety – it offers a sensory glimpse into a specific place and time. A magical & lovely wine. Cheers!

Roses de Jeanne La Bolorée Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne 2015

Cedric Bouchard makes some of the most singular, vinous and terroir expressive wines in Champagne which is even taken to the next level in his prized and ultra rare cuvée, La Bolorée. 2015 was a particularly great vintage for Bouchard and every cuvée I’ve tried has been fantastic. La Bolorée, 100% Pinot Blanc from 50+ year-old vines on limestone soils, is powerful, detailed and multidimensional showing layer upon layer of rich orchard fruit, white flowers and salty minerals. Just my 4th time having this bottling, but it is always a special drinking experience. We did not decant, but drank from Zalto Burgundy which somehow didn’t break on a boat 😅

Sève 'En Barmont' Les Riceys Rosé de Saignée Champagne

Ethereal and gorgeous, not your average rosé. A medium crimson color in the glass with effusive perlage. All the pretty red fruits on the nose. Strawberries, raspberries, and cherries, no doubt, but pineapples join the party too. Sweet brioche and beautiful floral notes complement.

From Les Riceys, the cross section of Champagne and Burgundy and it shows. Vinous, vibrant, and deep. The acidity is high and lovely along with terrific balance and weight throughout. 100% Pinot Noir with a nice combination of fruity and savory. The palate closely follows the nose with more sumptuous red berries and biscuits in the mouth. Oak on the long finish. A powerful champagne and one of my favorites.
