Fattoria Poggio di Sotto

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2015

Medium ruby with quite a terracotta , garnet rim . Quite sweetly spiced nose , red cherries , cedar , dried spice and some strawberry coulis , earthy undertones . Pretty young and fruit forward at the moment . This is quite elegant and perfumed on the palate with lots of fresh red fruits , cedar and dried sage . Balanced acidity and ripe but slightly grippy tannins . This has good length and a saline finish . Quite young still but enjoyable at the moment , will continue to show well over the next 10 years , maybe more. At Doppo restaurant, Soho . — 8 days ago

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2012

Sleek and smoothly textured, it displays an engaging, deep garnet appearance, with subtle aromatics and flavors of woodland herbs, dried fruit and nuts, and balsamic nuances. It has good structure and is well balanced with light acidity and gentle tannins at the long, mouth coating, tasty finish. Overall, an excellent wine from an excellent vintage. 2012 vintage.

Case Basse di Gianfranco Soldera

Riserva Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 1998

Mini vertical ‘98, ‘06, ‘09. This was my favorite. Wonderful aromas of licorice, leather, plums and black cherry are all replicated on the palate. Except for the color, a red core and a brick rim one would be hard pressed to guess its age — a month ago

THE Brunello. Full stop.
It is hard to explain the tactile experience of this wine. Once you have Soldera you can truly understand all the fuss about Brunello di Montalcino i reckon.
No others producers are close to his level, some have taken the same direction, but it is a long way to catch up.

Uccelliera

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2016

Rich red fruits (cherry) reflective of the excellent vintage. Rich savouriness on the medium + bodied palate. Liquorice notes. Based on how good the 2019 Rosso was from Uccelliera was, this was always going to be a winner. — 3 days ago

Hi Bob, do you think it still needs additional cellartime or is it already approachable?

@Anthony De Blasi Probably both Anthony - it is certainly enjoyable now but no problem cellaring for a few more years. Such a good vintage for Brunello.

A lovely Brunello. Classic in style, nose and character. Lovely. Drinking well but could go for another decade ( or two!). — 23 days ago

scored a split on closeout and it was tasty! probably just starting its gentle decline w/some musty oxidative aromas, but it also had engaging smoke & spice, worn leather, sour cherry, red currant, hint of vanilla & cocoa, sweet soil and other earth driven elements. med bodied, well worn tannins and some acidity presented a fairly balanced palate. usually priced out of Brunello so this was a treat! — 12 days ago

In a perfect spot! Great Brunello, tastes still young so I think quite some time left to drink these — 10 days ago

Tenuta Nuova Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2017

It was very acidity and a bit bland at first. Maybe it needed more time, but decanted for 3ish hours and it tasted a lot like mushrooms, balsamic, black currant and a touch of underbrush with forest floor- with a touch of oak and spice. It was tannic but there was a lack of something in the mid palate and fruit. As I drank the last glass after 5 hours of decanting, it started to open up beautifully. All the aforementioned characteristics but with a strong mid palate filled with dark fruit. Delicious. Not as good as other vintages but this is worth drinking but give it some time to decante. Maybe 4+ hours. — 20 days ago
