The Black Stump Durif Shiraz 2024

What’s Durif? Loved the combo with Australian Shiraz. Red and blackberry and cherry with a touch of oak and smoke. This was quite the fruit bomb with mild tannins and medium body. Please sir. . . I want some more. — 5 months ago

Domaine Sorin-Coquard

Cuvee Antique Cesar 2019

As someone else noted, a rare bottle of a super rare red grape from Burgundy called “Cesar” (10 hectares in the world) — very dark color, rich, dark fruits, some noticeable structure, this needs 3-5 years aging to settle down, a great “stump your wine friends” wine!! — 3 years ago

Lake's Folly

Hunter Valley Cabernets 2013

One doesn’t normally associate top flight Cabernet with the Hunter Valley but Lakes Folly , founded by ex surgeon Dr Max Lake (now past) turned that notion on its head and has been making top flight Cabernets for decades. This wine has strong mint aromas with some spice. Red fruited. Would stump a lot of tasters in a blind tasting as to its origins. If anyone can do Cabernets in the Hunter Valley it would be Lakes Folly. — a year ago

@Ron R Ron , I see the drinking window on the Winery website says drink to 2020 and 95 points. You should be right from Magnum but probably should open sooner rather than later. I’m sure it will be excellent.

Ridge Vineyards

Estate Monte Bello Vineyard Merlot 2012

Would have been a nice Merlot in the cab vs Merlot tasting. The good? This is a merlot. The bad? If you're trying to stump someone? Good luck because....this is a classic merlot. From Monte Bello Vineyard. Nose is brambly, yet a bit sweet. Terroir is on the nose in full force. The entry is dark yet a slight bit youthful. Forest floor, plum, black fruit and quite a bit of it. Finishes with some drier tannin. This one is at the top of its game right now, but isn't going to win many awards for WOTN as it just isn't complex on its own. Drank MUCH better with food. Drink or hold another 5 to 10 years. — 8 years ago

Tasca D'Almerita

Rosso del Conte Contea di Sclafani Red Blend 2008

Presented double-blind. Deep ruby color with a slightly watery rim; medium viscosity. No signs of particles or gas. On the nose, dark fruits, plums, cassis, some bell pepper, dry leaf tobacco, earth and some baking spice indicating the use of some barrique, probably French oak. On the palate, creme de cassis, some gravely earth, and baking spices. Medium plus tannin, medium plus acid. This is a very elegant wine. Beautiful, long, gorgeous finish. Likely a Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend. The wine was balanced and leaning more towards its structure which took me to the Old World, most likely left bank Bordeaux. Given the characteristics, I was thinking Margaux specifically. So that was my call...likely with 20+ years of age since it seems the tannins were integrating quite nicely. Turns out I got the variety and the Old World part right 😅. What a wine! I didn’t know folks were making stuff like this in Sicilia. This could stump anyone without any prior experience. Killer QPR even at $50. — 5 years ago

The Custodian McLaren Vale Grenache 2016

I really love D’Arenberg. Their budget wines- Stump Jumps - are always a good value( though not quite as good the last few years. This one and the Shiraz ( The Footbolt) are always terrific and @20$ I cant really afford the expensive ones but these rock. Medium bodied- not big and jammy- but great fruit and no wood! Finish lingers with some tannic bitterness. Can drink on its own or very food friendly. I had it with grilled burgers. And vintage to vintage, it’s really good! — 6 years ago
