Château Fleur Grand Champs

Château Fleur Cardinale

Grand Cru Classé Saint-Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2014

First bottle corked. Luckily able to pull another from the cellar to compare. What a difference! Great learning when you can compare. Black cherry, smooth, decent acidity, very soft tannins. First bottle was wet cardboard. — 7 days ago

Vilmart & Cie

Grand Cellier 1er Cru Champagne Blend

Shay A
9.2

Opened during the WB virtual taste with Thomas Champs of the Vilmart family.

Disgorged April 2022; 70% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot noir; 7g/dosage; no malo; 10months in oak

While I’ve had Vilmart before, I’ve not focused on the wine and its history before the way I did with this virtual taste. Normally 7g/l dosage starts to cause me to pause, but this is another example of how dosage plays so many different instruments aside from sweetness. Beautiful texture and precision. Slight reduction upon opening. Brioche, lemon cream, honeycrisp apple (not tart; ripe), sea salt, faint honey. The mineral/chalk profile is upfront and the mousse is really nice and soft/creamy. A wonderful balance in acid, fruit, texture.

Followed over two days, and I may have enjoyed day two a small bit more! Always an incredible value.

Château La Fleur Morange

St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend

2022 vintage ( sorry for the blurry photo). Grand Cru Classé since the 2012 classification. Contrary to common belief ( as this estate started out as a garage wine), this is not a blockbuster. Beautifully balanced, concentrated, intense, but also very fresh and mineral, with a wonderful purity of fruit. A fantastic wine that will need a few years to shine completely. This estate has a unique soil composition and very old vines: 2 hectares with 100 years old Merlot and 80 years old Cabernet Franc vines. Also tasted the 2014 ( score 9.5) and the 2023 and 2024 from the barrel. Good to know that the 2024 is outstanding here! — a month ago

Brioche, lemon zest in this rich winner. A champs that could pair with a myriad of dishes.

Mathilde Saint-Emilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2022

2022 Mathilde. This is made from the vineyards of La Fleur Morange that are not classified as Grand Cru Classé. A beautiful wine in its own right that is hard to beat for value for money. — a month ago

Château Grand Moulin

Fleur Elysée Corbières Boutenac Carignan Blend 2016

On the bigger-framed and riper side, which is usually not my preferred style, but it’s pretty good nonetheless. Nose shows ripe dark fruit, and a tiny bit of dark ,chocolate, but that’s redeemed by nice dark olivey notes and deep stony minerality. Rich and very southern Rhone-like in the mouth, the richness again redeemed by the minerality. Would I have preferred they picked a little earlier? Sure. But this still is quite good. 40% Carignane, 30% Syrah, 30% Grenache. — 3 years ago
