Stony Hill

Napa Valley Chardonnay 2001

This is the same wine I reported on last fall, and this bottle is even better — while I purchased other vintages of Stony Hill Chardonnay that didn’t show this amount of longevity, this vintage is again fabulous, now at age 23. Color looks like a 5-7 year old Chardonnay, fabulously complex nose of minerals and floral notes, on palate remarkable freshness and youth, I think this is at or near peak, but this is simply amazing for aged Napa Chardonnay, WOW!!! — 2 days ago

Viña Tondonia Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2010

Very interesting wine. Nice mix of earth tea and lingering mouthfeel with cherry and fruit. Nice drinking window now. This was muscular and bursting. — 3 days ago

Napa Valley Merlot 2021

Dark Ruby color with aromas of ripe berry fruit and herb spice. On the palate flavors of ripe cherry and blackberry with leather, tobacco and cacao notes. Dusty fine tannins, medium+ finish ending rich with herb mineral spice. — 19 days ago

Kumeu River

Hunting Hill Chardonnay 2014

Exceptional wine and so classically elegant (not using the B word) except that its hiding an extra point of alcohol (14%) behind an unassuming pale hay glow that looks light and lean. I love the bait and switch.

The delicate sprinkled spices of lemon curd and vanilla and toasted coconut shaving juxtapose the power in the palette - weight and viscosity and length to go the distance.

10 years in, in a perfect spot.

Caymus Vineyards

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2022

We recently had this by the glass at Peaks, NYC. We enjoyed it so much that we bought a few bottles. While I consider this to be a “construction site,” I respect what the Wagner’s have accomplished. Not gonna bother with tasting notes as this is just a cherry compote fruit bomb. Tasted using a coravin as a few glasses represents a meal on its own. — 3 days ago

Like Ron, I respect what Chuck and his family have accomplished over their many years. The style of this wine changed in 2012. Chuck made a business decision to pick at higher brix’s thus making a sweeter wine. It paid off for him in higher more consistent Parker scores and likely better sales. I am one who preferred this wine pre 2012 and have made the pitch to a couple of their staff to yeah make this style of new Caymus but also make Caymus Classic. So far, no success. 🤷‍♂️

@David T, I’m right alongside you. I wondered if I should “out” myself on this posting and figured that the truth would set me free 🙃

Henschke

Hill of Grace Vineyard Shiraz 2002

This is Stephen Henschke’s favourite vintage of H of G he said. This was the first vintage he bottled under screw cap and all subsequent vintages have been bottled that way. They have also experimented with the Vinolok glass stopper. As Stephen said “I love tradition and it is very important as a 6th generation family owned winery. However when tradition lets you down as it has with cork, there is time to evaluate better closures. “ He went on to say the 2002 has that distinctive Hill of Grace nose which you can’t define but it does have the trademark mint, spice and sage. The palate is profoundly intense and could go on for another 10 years but flirting with perfection right now. — a month ago

Why not use the glass closure? I’m a big fan of those. I’ve never had a decayed bottle when sealed with glass. I’ve never tasted this wine due to its cost… sniff

Never disappoints. Deep nose: liqueur cherry & plum. But "deeper": caramel brownie - caramel, dark chocolate & gingerbread note. — a month ago
