1985 vintage.
Ruby red colour.
Nose of dried dark berries, tobacco, violets and herbs.
Flavours of black currants, licorice, leather and sandalwood.
Tannins are beautifully developed and the freshness of the wine is surprising with a juicy, long, lovely finish. An impressive wine at 38 years old.

Opened to celebrate my son’s 15th birthday and poured alongside the 2006 Eagle’s Trace “Latitude 38”. The 2006 Seavey Caravina pours a deep garnet color with a completely opaque core. No obvious signs of age in the glass. Medium+ viscosity. On the nose, medium+ intensity, with strong pipe tobacco notes, currants, black cherry, figs, some green bell pepper and leather. On the palate dark fruits dominate with black cherry, black currants and blackberries. The tobacco and leather is also there accompanied by semi-sweet baking chocolate, baking spice and some anise. The wine finishes dry with medium tannins, most of which are well integrated at this point. Medium+ acid. Medium plus alcohol. The finish is long. Another very lovely vintage of Caravina, aging gracefully.

I enjoyed this wine but perhaps not quite as much as RP’s 97 points. It was a little tart to open but mellowed with air. I was expecting a higher alcohol, more straightforwardedly fruity wine given the Argentine origins. However, the winemaker is explicitly targeting a Bordeaux taste in the style of Chateau Cheval Blanc. After I read that, the taste clicked a bit more. A smooth, tasty expression of the Bordeaux style. 62% malbec, 38% cabernet. $80. Would drink again. — 9 months ago

Wasn’t expecting to like English sparkling nearly as much as I’m enjoying this bottle. A truly bizarre combination of ripe fruit and racy acidity (higher than the average for champagne) that can only come from somewhere this far north > 50 degrees latitude (long growing season + long days during growing season). Lemon curd, green apple danish, even notes of pear and passion fruit. Bond may have to trade out his Bollinger for this. — 3 years ago
Blanc de Blancs, 100% Chardonnay from vineyards in the premier cru village of Vertus, in the Côte des Blancs (40% of wines from the estate’s reserve). Low dosage. Notes of vanilla and yeast. Mostly green apple on the palate. Dry, great chalky texture, somewhat reminiscent of Jura white — 6 months ago
Blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (54%), Merlot (38%) and Cabernet Franc (8%). Dark ruby color with purple highlights. Dark fruit aromas with hints of charcoal, bramble, mint and violets. Black cherry leads the palate along with notes of blueberry, plum, currants and dark chocolate. Hint of minerals and fresh herbs on the long finish. Juicy, fresh tasting and well structured. Nick brought as guest to our house. We both really like it. A bit more expensive like 38 dollars. — 19 days ago
