Jasper Hill

Georgia's Paddock Shiraz 2019

97P WS, Whopping 15.5%. At the edge of where natural yeast dies. May be they used designer yeast? Anyways this is actually pretty good. Enormously complex with a bazillion interesting flavors including Eucalyptus. Picked this up for a tasting (I am hosting) it will be a mega hit. Folks will love this in your face flavor hammer. Giant Steps

Applejack Vineyard Pinot Noir 2017

Mid to pale crimson - actually transparent. The pale colour belies the aromatic and palate intensity. Aromatics of cherry and raspberry transforming on to the medium bodied sweet red fruited palate. A touch of Sous Bois. An excellent Pinot as always from the Applejack Vineyard from Giant Steps. — 7 months ago

Sangreal Pinot Noir 2019

Very dark Ruby in colour - impenetrable. Red fruits, dried herbs, plum and plum skins - evidence of whole bunch in the ferment ( 70% apparently). Lovely balance, fruit quality and complexity, all at only 6 years of age. An overall sweetness on the palate which overrides the savoury characters. Being from Geelong it’s interesting to compare with the Yarra Valley and Mornington Pinots on the opposite (eastern) side of Port Phillip Bay - same latitude - this seems more succulent although all 3 districts are excellent for Pinot Noir. This is the first of 5 bottles - the drinking window will go another 6 years into the 2030s. This is an exceptional Australian Pinot. — a year ago

@Ceccherini Cristiano I do agree Cec that Geelong Pinot is a little more full bodied than Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula. All good though.

@Bob McDonald absolutely i love pinots from all those three area and also from Central Victoria i must say.😊

Curly Flat

Pinot Noir 2017

It’s been a while between Curly pinots. Always a joy to open one, with fond memories attached along with the pleasure of the wine itself. Despite five years from vintage, this is still young and stern but elegant. Clear lines and structure, a spicy, cedary top note amongst red fruit and firm but soft tannins. Clean, I’d call it, plus whole bunch characters. Quality pinot undoubtedly, that should improve even more. — 4 years ago

Dry Red Wine No°2 Shiraz Blend 2005

Signature Bailey wine, volatility evident with lovely spice and lifter nose from Viognier. Also some tart cherry evident which was unexpected. — a year ago

Mount Langi Ghiran

Langi Shiraz 2008

See 3 previous notes for the 2008 vintage (and one for the 2009). This was my final 2008 sadly. Without mincing words, this is one of my favourite Australian reds, and has been for a long time. Trademark white pepper, spice and liquorice. The plums and blackberry of its youth are now more savoury in style. Just a stunning wine which could compete with any top grade Cote Rotie. Unfortunately the price now reflects the high quality. In the Good Wine Guide of 2011 this was voted Best Shiraz and Wine of the Year. Nick Stock - 98 points. — a year ago

Bass Phillip

The Estate Pinot Noir 2016

A typically good Bass Phillip Estate PN from a good vintage. Mid red in colour with a tawny hint. Aromatics of stewed red fruits with Sous Bois/compost heap. Dried herbs. The palate is delicious showing those savoury red fruits finishing with silky tannins. All coming together at 10 years of age. Sadly my last bottle from this vintage. — 5 months ago

@Bob McDonald restocking is getting very pricey the 2022 Bass Phillip Reserve PN is now about $A 1200 or about $US 800 😮
Bob McDonald

@David White Yes the price of the Reserve has gone through the roof since Phillip Jones sold to the Burgundians. I must admit to buying some in previous vintages when it was around $500/$600 but not now. The Premium is still worth it.

Mount Mary

Quintet Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2005

From the Yarra Valley a Bordeaux blend of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc, 5% Malbec and 3% Petit Verdot. 20 months in new French oak. Mid Ruby to garnet in colour. Classic aromas of cedar and cigar box with fading Cassis. A medium bodied palate with those smooth ultra silky flowing tannins. This is drinking well at 20 years of age. My last bottle. This producer has probably flown under the radar for many North American wine lovers as Robert Parker was never a fan with some of his Tasting Notes being quite hostile. The Middletons probably stopped exporting to the USA after that as they had no trouble selling their production locally and in the UK. The just released 2023 vintage was honoured with Australian Wine of the Year by The Australian newspaper and given 99 points by Wine editor Nick Ryan. Quintet is always one of Australia’s best Cabernet blends. — 7 months ago

Bindi

Original Vineyard Pinot Noir 2015

My last bottle of the 2015 Bindi Original Vineyard Pinot. Pale in colour - almost transparent. More savoury, mulchy, Sous Bois than the tasting note in 2021 but it is red fruited with raspberry notes. Fine tannins. I don’t buy much wine these days but I do try to buy Bindi most years. I just received a mixed 6 and put away a couple of bottles of the 2023 Original Vineyard Pinot into the cellar. — a year ago
