Europa Village

Domaine François Buffet

Le Village Volnay 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2023

Lyle Fass
9.6

THE sleeper in the Buffet lineup. I adore this wine as it’s the most lacey, elegant, ephemeral 1er cru not just in Volnay but in all of Burgundy. It’s just gorgeous. Nose leaps out of the glass with unreal cherries and florals. Almost cherries in a demi glace. So provocative. It’s so expansive like when you’ve squeezed a flower petal or a piece of marijuana and you get the pungent aroma. That’s just the resting state for this nose. Huge spice. I could smell this all day. Wow. 9.7 nose. The palate is just silk. This is the silkiest 1er cru ever. Hauntingly elegant and with the most energetic yet sweet fruit. Gorgeous, pitter patter tannins and sweet fruit that is so pure and so delicate. The most gorgeous wine and has loads of early charm. I knew this was going to be a star in 23. Wow. — 14 days ago

Matthiasson

Village Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Feel like every time I want to drink Mathiasson its more expensive than the last time. I love what they’re about in Napa so don’t mind supporting them. This is so good. — 19 days ago

Château de Villars Fontaine

le Haut du Village Pinot Noir 2010

Quite light garnet core with a wide watery garnet rim . Quite reserved and closed at first , with light red currant , herbal wild strawberry , ripe red cherry and earthy , dry spices . On the palate this has quite a rustic , tannic profile for a simples Bourgogne Hautes Cotes de Nuits , with quite fresh acidity but has enough cool strawberry , raspberry , red currant and earthy sous bois to fill out on the palate . Balanced alcohol and reasonable length , with a hint of bitterness . Pretty old school and rustic in style but certainly individual and has personality. In this vintage at least there is just enough mid palate to deal with the extended aging in oak . This does need a little time to open up and requires food and arguably needs a little more time , though I do worry that with more time in bottle it will loose the little fruit that it still has . So drink now and over the next 5 years or so . Overall probably the best red I have had from Chateau de Villars Fontaine . — 2 months ago

Tenuta Sette Ponti

Crognolo Toscana Super Tuscan Blend 2019

In the heart of the Chianti lies Estate of Sette Ponti, 15 miles northwest of the city of Arezzo, past village of San Giustino Valdarno. Has 10% Merlot, aged in French Allier barriques, deep Ruby with red fruit aromas and floral notes. On the palate blackberry, plum and cherry flavors with blossom notes, spice and fine integrated tannins. Good balance, long finish ending with some oak and mineral tones. Nice! Will age a bit! Tasting well now! — 7 months ago

Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg

Vosne-Romanée Pinot Noir 2012

There’s village and then there’s village. Gibourg made fabulous 2012’s and at age 12, the Vosne village is showing superbly, with seamless layers of fruit, mineral and spice, with the concentration of the vintage and the elegance and finesse of the site and winemaking yielding the perfect combination. In a great spot. — 8 months ago
