Bass Phillip

Bindi

Quartz Macedon Ranges Chardonnay 2015

At my 2015 Chardonnay Challenge the Bindi Quartz was the consensus winner from 6 Chardonnays. Ripe grapefruit and mineral - very balanced. Finishes with a touch of moreish salinity. Quite an achievement to finish No. 1 in this field. — 20 days ago

Bass Phillip

The Estate Pinot Noir 2018

I didn’t make any notes. Bass Phillip Estate has a consistency almost regardless of vintage. The first of my 2018s. Sappy and forest floor. Red fruits. Very Good. — 2 months ago

Curly Flat

Macedon Ranges Chardonnay 2021

From half bottle at what I believe is Australia’s best Cantonese restaurant which is Flower Drum in Melbourne, and has been for 48 years. I had the Chefs banquet of 6 small courses. No notes on the wine but a quality producer from a quality terroir in the Macedon Ranges. Definitely cool climate and on the lean side. Great with food. — 2 months ago

Yarra Yering

Underhill Shiraz 2012

A lovely nose - spice, earth and charcuterie. Really, the previous Delectable note said it all - “more Rhone than Barossa”. A medium weight savoury palate which worked well with home made pizza. With air the aromatics gave more dried meat and charcuterie notes..like a plate of freshly sliced Pastrami. Drinking at its peak I think, but will remain at this level until the end of the decade. Excellent. — a month ago

@Jan de Weerd @Doug Powers Yarra Yering has been in good hands since inception. Dr Bailey Carrodus’s last vintage was 2008 I believe. His successor, Sarah Crowe has been a more than worthy successor being awarded Winemaker of the year at least once. It is a special terroir which has been lucky to be under the stewardship of 2 gifted winemakers. The latest vintages keep on overachieving. The Dry Red No. 2 2022 was just awarded Halliday’s Red Wine of the Year.

@Doug Powers 2021 was a stellar vintage in the Yarra.

Yarra Yering

Dry Red Wine No°2 Shiraz Blend 2019

My 2nd half bottle from Flower Drum last week. Delectable this is the Dry Red No. 2 which is a Syrah based blend. No notes as such but this is a very Northern Rhone style. Like many great wines Intensity without heaviness. Medium to full bodied. — 2 months ago

Giant Steps

Sexton Vineyard Pinot Noir 2018

Brief notes. Sweet red fruits - raspberry and strawberry. Whole bunch influence. An excellent Yarra Valley Pinot Noir with a proven track record but at the end of the day Applejack Vineyard is marginally in front of Sexton Vineyard IMO. — 2 months ago

Joshua Cooper

Doug's Vineyard-Romsey Pinot Noir 2022

Sunday lunch with the annual boys trip away for the Rugby where the Wallabies had a win over Wales last weekend. Lunch at top notch Sydney restaurant Icebergs at Bondi Beach. I picked this one from the extensive Wine List from young gun Joshua Cooper who has some famous neighbours in the Macedon Ranges like Bindi and Curly Flat. This was more full bodied than I was expecting but got the thumbs up from all the Rugby fans who ordered a 2nd bottle. A generous Pinot showing ripe red fruits and plenty of whole bunch character. — 3 months ago
