Château Montrose

Saint-Estèphe Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2019

Deep and quite opaque , narrow ruby rim . Quite a lot of wood spice though with time in the glass there is a lot underneath that oak , dark cassis , ripe blackberry and a mineral undertone . Quite round and ripe on the palate , almost ‘new world’ in style compared to some of the preceding vintages , rounded but gritty tannin , balanced acidity . Generous and round, but with balanced alcohol , good length. Dark cassis , blackberry dark cherry notes. A strong oyster shell , saline component after a while in the glass . Needs time obviously , even though this is quite round and ripe. Intense with great potential. Better in 10-15 years will last well a further 10-15. — 12 hours ago

Château Gloria

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2019

Blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), Merlot (24%), Cabernet Franc (6%) and Petite Verdot (5%). Dark Ruby/purple color. Aromas of blueberry, black currants, violets and tobacco. Black fruit (blackberry, black currant, black plum) on the palate with hints of chocolate, black licorice, baking spices and black pepper. Medium-plus bodied and a slight note of mineral/graphite on the long flavorful finish. Well integrated oak, creamy texture and lively acidity. — 3 days ago

Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1986

I’m tasting a bit of greenness and it’s faded but for what it is and its age - nice — 2 days ago

Always get the green streak on Lalande.

Château Giscours

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 2009

2009 vintage. Generous fill. Fairy tale cork. Decanted and tasted after 30 mins. Just a little bit of sed. Light-medium body as is the usual Giscours style. Some cherry prettiness melded with dusty earth and appropriate tannic presence. Nose a bit of dark plum that wasn’t forwarded onto the flavor platform-at least at the opportunity I had to enjoy it. Never an explosive style from this Château and this was opened about 5-7 years too early to hit the top of the specific bell curve. Drinking very very nicely now and (easily) for the next decade +. 4.20.24. — 19 days ago

Château Lagrange

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2009

I was disappointed by the amarone before so I popped up this one to find a great reliable pour for the last evening of our guest and best friend from back home (and yours truly last evening before a day off).
What comes to mind is umami. The nose is full on cedar, cigar box, tar, black currant and soy sauce. The palate is massive, wide, grainy, silky, tannic in the rear with a grain, some chocolate and that umami, meat sauce touch that lingers for a very long moment. Bordeaux grand cru classé like you would like it to be every single time. 🥺

Lagrange...hell yes.

Château Mouton Rothschild

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1986

Initially this was incredibly closed, but after 2 hours in the decanter it’s starting to open, tannic, very structured, very 1986 in its leanness, but incredible depth and length, not perfect, but still outstanding!! — 13 days ago

Lean doesn’t sound so good.

@Bob McDonald, I personally have mostly felt that 1986 Bordeaux reds have always shown super tight and structured, but without the riper, rounder fruit of other vintages like 1982, 1985, 1989 and 1990) — so, my use of “lean” is really intended to convey that the fruit never completely overcomes the harsh tannins and structure. I would say that after a few hours in the decanter, I’d be pretty confident that it will easily last another 10-20 years, or more. Ultimately I like my Bordeaux to show a little more elegance and charm. Hope that helps.

@Doug Powers Thanks for your thoughts Doug. I recall Jancis commenting on this wine “wondering if the tannins would ever resolve”. Obviously built for the ultra long haul. I might try my first one in the next year or so.

Château Chasse-Spleen

Moulis en Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend 1986

A perfect bottle, direct import from a Negotiate via K&L. It has seen only Chateau & Negotiate storage.

Love, love, love the style of 80’s Bordeaux. Especially, the very good 80’s vintages. The style at this age is just so good as is the 12.5 ABV.

The fruit is still very solid & fresh. Ruby; blackberries, plums, poached strawberries, black raspberries, raspberries & blueberries hues. Lead pencil for days, some light v/a-bandaid, used tobacco w/ ash, very used leather, dark spice, understated mushroom, baking spices- light nutmeg/clove, cinnamon, vanillin, dry, river stone, limestone, dark rich soil with dry leaves, mix of dry and fresh herbs, touch of mint, moist clay, withering & dry dark, red, flowers, rainfall acidity and a well balanced, nicely structured, softly tensioned, beautiful finish that lasts 90 seconds.

Paired with/ Allen Brothers Cover Ribs.

Château Léoville-Las Cases

Grand Vin de Leoville du Marquis de las Cases Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2010

This should cellar longer. Maybe another 5 yrs before I try again. Decanted over 3 hrs. Tight in first hour. It needs a lot air now. Many layers and complex fruit. It lingers. Meaty after taste. Dark fruit. Earthy. I liked it very much and look forward to the next one. — 5 days ago
