Tignanello Toscana Super Tuscan Blend 2021

The aroma. If something tastes superb, it is how this wine impacts your senses. Smelling in the glass just before swallowing takes you to wine lovers heaven. Enjoyed with my wife, my son, sister in law and René, Who surprised all of us with this present. — 3 months ago

Dom Pérignon

Brut Champagne Blend 2012

At the Dom Perignon dinner last Friday night. David Cross from Moët Hennessy who presented on the night said that this was the first showing of the 2012 in Australia. More intensity and power than the 2010. David thought the 2012 will be the better wine (a definite future P2 star) but the 2010 the better wine to drink now. Almost like a very good white burgundy with a little bubble. — 4 years ago

The Boy Who Cried Wolf (Equinox Edition 1) Chardonnay 2012

Almost a 91. But a bit short. Peaches and dried nuts. A little on the viscous side and to be honest with you I really didn't know what to expect. Leaner towards the finish. If I saw this on a discount for $40, I'd buy a couple of bottles. Rearding longevity, I just don't think this one is getting any better in the bottle, so might as well drink it now. — 6 years ago

Another wine that seems to be in “drink now” mode. A touch sulfuric on the nose. Very savory with sea salt, popcorn kernel, and only the faintest note of Meyer lemon. Herbal, sea salt butter, and butterscotch. Unique.

Opus One

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2009

So for those who don’t know, this wine is a collaboration between one of the most famous California winemakers and one of the most famous Bordeaux wine makers (the grapes are from Napa).

The young expression when I first had it 10 years ago was big bold ripe fruit, probably the quintessential Napa cab.

The aged expression had more secondary and tertiary characteristics, terroir, and represented Baron Rothschild in respects of crafting a wine that could grow and develop and express the care that goes into winemaking as opposed to simply growing good fruit.

The young version of it perfectly expresses Mondavi and Napa. The aged version captures the elegance of Bordeaux winemaking and Rothschild’s fingerprints. You cannot fully experience this wine unless you’ve had it young and old. Unbelievable experience tonight.

Caillard

Mataro 2015

Mid Ruby red in colour with a tawny edge. Sour cherry with touches of pepper and cloves. Not as raspberry as I was expecting from old vine Mataro. With a couple of hours of aeration the raspberry notes started coming through finishing with Sandy tannins. This wine is made by the multi talented Andrew Caillard who is the supremo of Fine Wine retailer and auctioneer Langtons who allowed Andrew to make his superb range of wines under his own label using old vine Mataro and Shiraz; painted the exquisite labels himself and who achieved a Master of Wine in his spare time. I am lucky to have 5 of these beauties left. 96 points from James Halliday. — 3 years ago

The Standish Wine Company

Single Vineyard Shiraz 2019

Decanted for 24 hours so that it could open up as it’s so young.
Incredible flavour, complex, red fruits but not too bold and some nuisance too.
Time will serve this well. A winemaker who dances to his own tune and making great music.

Great producer, greater having to produce wines in a region of constant chaos.

Dominus Estate

Dominus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 1990

Not what I was hoping for,
Gave it some air but not too much so that we didn’t lose the sweet spot. Didn’t touch the Shafer until this was finished. Just a typical older Bordeaux blend from Napa but very ordinary considering the price point. Secondary market purchase so who knows prior storage.

Bummer. Picked up some 1991, 2006 and 2019 Dominus recently. As always, cautiously optimistic.

I still have 6 bottles of 18, still not fit for drinking. I figured out of most of Napa that Heitz, Dominus & BV GLT would be the ones to go with in 1990 vintage.
I’m 1 for 2 so far

Fattoria dei Barbi (Colombini)

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2011

Takes its name from the free-spirited gentleman named Bruscone who lived in the woods of the Barbi Estate. Deep Ruby with aromas of berry fruits and sweet herb notes. On the palate ripe cherry, plum and dried fruits with tobacco and cola notes, well balanced on firm tannins still with a good grip that loosens quickly. Long finish ending with mineral and earthy notes. Good now but will still benefit from a few more years. Went great with hearty pasta dish! — 5 years ago
